HOW TO GET TO TRAVNIK?

We recommend that you arrive in Sarajevo a few days prior tp commencing your studies. This will give you time to settle in and to get acquainted with the city before starting classes. If you wish to arrive early, the International Relations Office can assist you with addresses of hostels and inexpensive hotels.

Arriving by plane

If you arrive by plane, you arrive at Sarajevo Airport, which is located 12 kilometres from the city centre of Sarajevo, and 85 kilometres from International University Travnik. You can take a taxi (which fares include service charges and therefore you are usually not expected to tip) from the Airport and get to the city centre, and later on, depending on your plan of travel, to Sarajevo Bus Station to get on the bus to Travnik.

Arriving by train

There are several international trains within the only one Sarajevo train station. Tickets for the train are purchased on the platfrom or in the train terminal.

Arriving by bus

Just one hudred meters from the train station is the bus station. Sarajevo has one bus station. Tickets for the bus can be purchased on the bus or in the main platform. You need seperate tickets for bus and train.

Temporary residence permit

Exhange students staying in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a period longer than three months (90 days) need to regulate the residence permit upon their arrival at the Ministry of security. More info: www.msb.gov.ba

Visa

The list of countries whose nationals need a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina can be found at the web pages of the B&H Ministry of Foreign affairs. Foreigners can apply for a visa at the nearest BH Embassy, Consular or Diplomatic Mission in their home country. More info:  www.mvp.gov.ba

Last, but not least, please be sure to check your baggage weight limitations with the airline or railway company with which you are travelling. Paying for excess baggage can be very expensive.

YOU ARRIVED TO TRAVNIK

Climate

The climate here is mild, and generally warm and temperate. The is a great deal of rainfall in Travnik, even in the driest month. This location is classified as Cfb by Köppen and Geiger. The average annual temperature is 11.5 °C in Travnik. About 509 mm of precipitation falls annually.

Local currency and banks

Originally, the BAM was pagged to the German mark. With the introduction of the Euro, the KM changed its peg without the least bit of trouble (1.95 BAM for 1 EUR). Euros are not accepted in shops, restaurants, public transport or other services. There are many ATM machines in all major cities (in Travnik  centre at least ten of it). US dollars, British punds, yens and other major currencies can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices. They will also change your leftover of BAM back into any of the main currencies. Although credit cards are widely accepted in Travnik, your should not rely only on them. VISA and Master Cards will be accepted in most places, but no guarantee with the American Express.

Public holidays

Public holidays during which all public institutions, banks, and post offices in Travnik are closed:

New Year – January 1st and 2nd

Indepedence day – March 1st

International Labour Day – May 1st and 2nd

Statehood Day – November 25th

Some public institutions, post offices, and banks, as well as some shops and services are also closed during religion holidays.

Internet availability

Broadband internet access is widely available throughout Travnik (cable, ADSL, wireless) but it depends also on your accommodation (ask for details). Prices and speeds are changing (currently for 15 Euros per month you can get 1Mbit flat rate). There are many internet caffes and IUT has its own computer room. Also, many cafes and bars have free Wi_Fi.

Water

Almost every town in BiH has one or more public fontains – often to be found in front of the mosque – with water of excellent quality. There are street fointains as well, built a long time ago for thirsty travellers. Bosnia and Herzegovian is also rich with small springs and streams of sparking fresh water to be found along many mountain walking roads (please, do try „Plava voda“ spring in Travnik). In shor, there are no worries with drinking water in BiH and it is probably of higher quality than you have it at home!

Taxis are quite cheap in Travnik. The price from bus station to Iut is 2.5. Euros (5 KM/BAM).

Working hours

Weekdays: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Weekdays: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (depends on shop)

Sundays and holidays: depends on shops, grocery shops are open, but some can be found closed.

Pharmacies are all over the city centre of Travnik, and you can easily locate them by their signs in Travnik.
